Your reading a book. It's slow, there isn't much of a plot, and you are uninterested. Finally, you finish it. You pick another book of your shelf, but no matter how hard you try, you just can't seem to get into the story. You try again with another book. Nothing is working. You are frustrated and imagining the worst. What if I never read again? Is this it? Am I ever going to feel the same way about a novel again?
Never fear my friends! I've got you covered.
In times like these I will always recommend a contemporary book. If you don't like contemporary, look for an easy read. Find something that you can get through that isn't so intense to bring you back up to the level you want to be at. Here are my favourites:
1. Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell
Positively addicting.
2. All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven
Not so light hearted, but still brilliant.
3. We Were Liars by E. Lockhart
This one is really intense, but is also short so you will fly through it.
4. Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins
I have not read this myself, but I have heard great things about it helping people out of reading slumps so I thought I would include it for good measure.
5. Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Sáenz
I am reading it right now and it might be my favourite contemporary of all time.
6. Wonder by R.J Palacio
This is a wonderful book, it made me happy cry and sad cry.
7. Dot by Araminta Hall
This book can get a bit odd, but I really enjoyed it.
8. The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky
Both one of mine and Maud's favourite books EVER.
Those are my recommendations. An important thing with reading slumps is: DON'T force yourself to read. If you don't want to, don't. Simples. It will only make things worse. Don't be discouraged.
Good luck with getting out of your book rut, I hope these suggestions helped.
Au revoir,
Emile :)
