Tips for music theory exams; Days 3 and 4 // Emile

Hello everyone,

apologies for not posting yesterday, blogger was down so despite my efforts nothing went up. Don't fret though! The posts every day shall continue (as much as possible) for the entirety of this month. Today I will honour you with my tips for music theory exams. If you play an instrument, you probably will have done or will have to do a theory of music exam at some point. I am, by the way, not an expert on this. However, I am about to sit my grade 4 music theory exam, so I like to think that  I have gained some experience in my time. Here is my advice:

1. Definitely absolutely do not leave any of it to the last minute.

Make sure you know all of the content at least a month in advance, otherwise you will be stressing and scrambling trying desperately to learn the rest of the content in not enough time.

2. Do some past papers.

In my experience, these really help. They show you what you actually do know and what you need to revise and practise before your exam.

3. Learn your key signatures!

I think this is quite obvious, but I thought I'd better put it in her anyway.

4. Use flashcards/ Quizlet.

You are probably aware of how useful flashcards are for learning difficult details. What is even more useful is Quizlet (not sponsored by the way) which is an free online site where you can make flashcards and they have lots of different modes to help you learn the content. There is also an app which means that you can easily fit in some quick revision whenever you have a moment. I recommend it very much.

5. Use devices to learn difficult information.

For grade 3, I made up a song to the tune of "Under the Sea" from The Little Mermaid to help me remember my key signatures and it worked! Acronyms, mnemonics, little rhymes or songs can be incredibly useful when your stuck in the exam room.

I hope these tips are useful! Let me know what you like to do to study for any exam.
The End,
